Toypixx Action Figure Collection
The Toypixx action figure collection is kind of a big deal, at least when it comes to action figure photography. Because, frankly, one needs action figures for action figure photography.
One of my favorite aspects of collecting action figures is following the A.B.C. rule: Always Be Curating. Because of that rule, I have a collection full of action figures I truly enjoy. It’ll never be the biggest action figure collection out there, but it’s one I truly enjoy.
And hey, it helps that it’s pretty photogenic.
With the preamble out of the way, keep reading to see the entire Toypixx action figure collection. And keep coming back, because A.B.C. means it’ll always be changing.

Photogenic Figures: Sept 8 – Sept 14, 2024
Hasbro Pulse Con, Threezero’s Transformers One, and More!
Photogenic action figures is where I talk about all the figures that went up for preorder in the last week I think are gonna look good under your lights, and in front of your lens!
This week, Hasbro went crazy with Pulse Con, Threezero went heavy into their Transformers One MDLX figures, and S.H.Figuarts pulled off their weekly show-off session! Plus plenty more. So yeah, there’s a lot to type about!
Hasbro Pulse Con Star Wars Black Series
Let’s start with what I saw worked from the Star Wars Black Series line, when it comes to toy photography, anyway. And that is the Commando Droid!
I don’t normally suggest Black Series for photos because of limited articulation and the lack of extra accessories, most notably hands. But droids don’t really need all that. Besides, this thing’s SWEET!

Hasbro Pulse Con GI Joe Classified
To me, the articulation of the standard GI Joe figure beats out all other Hasbro lines. The ball-peg waists add SO MUCH more natural movement! Waist cuts must be destroyed! Photo Dave SMASH just thining about ’em.
Anywho, the winner for me was Leatherneck! Extra hands add so many more possibilities for action figure photography that I’d really like Classified (and all other lines) to make them standard.

Pick up Leatherneck at: Amazon • Entertainment Earth
Pulse Con Marvel Legends
I mega loathe waist cuts. And because of that, I sold off the vast majority of my Marvel Legends a couple years ago. That typed, I can’t deny that the Legends team has been stepping it up in terms of accessories. And in the past few months, I’m hearing less complaints about the quality.
And with their Secret Wars line, it looks like they’re really commited to improvement. Also, I hugely dig Cap’s busted shield.

If you check out the Toypixx Collection, you’ll see I have some MDLX. And they are impressive! And yours truly sees no reason why these won’t follow suit. Plus, just look at that D-16 / Megatron!

NECA and Mezco have jumped aboard the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice train, and it doesn’t look like SHF’s far behind! Because of course they’re not.
Of the two up for preorder, I think the NECA one has the better likeness, but the Mezco one has the more classic Beetlejuice look. BOTH, however, are highly photogenic!

All the Other Cool Things
And now, the last group of figures from this post! All photogenic (excapt possibly the McFarlane stuff), but they just didn’t have categories they fit neatly into.
My caution with all things McFarlane Toys: They’re getting way better at including extras, but while the points of articulation are always there, the engineering on them is hit and miss. So in theory they should pose well, but oftentimes they don’t.
Anywaho, onto the figures!

Mafex Action Figures: The Ultimate in Toy Photography
Disclaimer: I’m a Mafex Action Figure Whore
That’s right, give me a Mafex action figure and I’ll do things. Nasty things. I mean, I might scrub your toilet or pull hair out of your shower drain. Maybe even wash those dishes that have been piling up in your sink for a month.
That IS what you thought I meant by “nasty things,” right?
The point is, I really dig Mafex action figures. And nowhere are they more diggable than under the lights and in front of the lens.
In this blog post, I’m gonna tell you why.
Mafex Aesthetic

Mafex action figures are pretty. They’re sooo pretty. The joints are as seamless as can be without being that creepy rubbery skin that makes action figures look TOO real. And makes your skin crawl.
Then there’s the actual look of the figures themselves. They all look like they jumpred straight off the comic book page or the silver screen. There are sacrifices made here. There’s no “Give them a good enough version and we’ll make them buy a slightly better version later” going on with these figures. All I can see when I look at them is pure perfection.
Just check ou the DC Comics Photo Gallery or the Marvel Comics Photo Gallery to see what I mean. And if ya don’t feel like that much clicking, take a gander at these wonderful toys:

Mafex Articulation

Mafex action figures can move. And it’s not just one figure out of 20 … the Mafex articulation is standard across the board. Which I suppose is what standard means.
I’m not going to get into the mechanics of how they work from an engineering standpoint … I don’t know joint names that well. But I can you what I’ve noticed about how well they can call move.
The heads move up and down and all around on the necks. The necks do the same thing on the torso. There are butterly joints at the shoulders AND the shoulders move up and down. The chest and waist joints spin all over the place … thus eliminating that oh-so-fugly figure-split-in-half look. There’s bicep swivel on all the figures. There’s great elbow articulation on all the figures (the ladies don’t have as much range) and the wrists move every which way you want them to. There are drop-down hips, which give the legs more of a bend, double knees and ankle joints for daaayys!
Yeah, if you want ultra-articulted action figures, pick up some Mafex.
Mafex Accessories

When it comes to toy photography, accessories are a must. You need tons of hands and heads to give your action figures all kinds of personality. And, if I’m being honest, the vast majority of companies just don’t load us up with that much in the accessory department.
But Mafex does. Mafex usually gives us two or more heads and all kinds of hands. It’s almost ludicrous. And I love it. Then, they also throw in any and all weapons that are critical to the action figures in question … unless you’re owned by Warner Bros., because NO GUNS FOR YOU!
Other Toy Photography Contenders

Mezco Toyz
I have to admit, it’d be awfully naive of me to heap glowing praise on Mafex without acknowledging some pretty wicked competitors. And the first one that comes to mind, is Mezco Toyz.
Now, Mezco’s an expensive line. If you don’t factor in shipping, the action figures themselves are quite a bit more expensive than Mafex. And I have a problem with their business model, which I know colors my perception of the company. Also, I’ve been waiting forever to get any preorders from them, so I can’t speak to their quality. What I know for sure, simply because of cloth goods, is that they won’t articulate as well as Mafex figures.
But for now, let’s pretend to forget all that while I talk about the one thing no company even comes close to touching Mezco on: accessories.
Take a peek at the above picture of Bishop, whom I chose specifically because he’s a cheaper Mezco figure. Now look at all those head, hand, weapon and blast effect accessories. It’s insane! I’ll never buy a super-posable character from Mezco, but characters like Bishop, Ghost Rider, Doctor Doom, the Fantastic Four? Well, if I even get any of those preorders, I’ll let ya know if I decide to keep going with the line.

S H Figuarts
S H Figuarts is another company I get action figures from. Specifically, I get Star Wars action figures from them. They have great articulation and come with perfect accessories for the characters the figures represent. Based solely on the fact I collect these things and dig ’em, I had to put them down as contenders. But thus far, in my experience, there’s no such thing as a perfect S H Figuarts action figure.
The Mandalorian, whom I really dig in spite of its flaws, needed a custom neck peg from John Walker Customs. And his spear and rifle are such pains to work with, I just run with the fact he no longer has them in the Disney Plus show. Boba Feet’s pretty great, except for the cross eye. And the Luke Skywalker’s a phenomenol Return of the Jedi Luke (minus the weirdly-wired Jedi robe), but he’s supposed to be based on the look he had at the end of season two of The Mandalorian.
Still, they do look awfully pretty under the lights.

Conclusion

Yup. I’m definitely a Mafex whore. What can I say? The articulaton’s top-notch. The aesthetic’s top-notch. And the accessaries are everything need to be. These are complete action figures that look great and move oh-so-smoothly.
Yeah, there are contenders. And yeah, I really dig the ones I’ve picked up. But for my cash, no other line does, or can do, what Mafex figures can do under the lighs and in front of the lens.
But enough about what I think. Comment below and let me know if you dig Mafex just as much as I do. And if not, which action figure lines do you think work perfectly for toy photography? Because hey, my wallet hasn’t killed me yeet and I may wanna check ’em out.
But no matter what, I’m only cleaning your toilet for Mafex aciton figures.
Have fun, and happy snapping!

I’m Back! With NECA Fugitoid, S H Figuarts Boba Fett and The Mandalorian, and ThreeZero MDLX Bumblebee
Threezero Bumblebee, SH Figuarts Boba Fett, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the NECA Fugitoid are pretty rad. Also, I’m finally healthy enough to get back to creating videos! Kids, make sure to go to the doctor when things aren’t right.
Anywho, in this return video, I go over quick sorta reviews of the above figures, and do so with way too much energy for someone who’s only had one cup of coffee, today.
So sit back, grab a beverage, and enjoy the ramblings of this particular toy collector.

I’m Back w/ Fugitoid, Boba Fett, The Mandalorian, and Bumblebee!
Hello there. It is I, photo Dave. And it’s been a while since I recorded a video for the old YouTubes for the people. So I figured I’d tell you why. And then I get into a little bit of showing off what I’ve gotten recently, which isn’t a lot. 2022’s been a kind of a light year lately, but I’ll show off what I’ve got. Cuz I do have some good stuff.
But first, if you’re new to the website, Toypixx is all about action figure photography. So I’ll talk quite a bit here about action figures, about photo equipment, about what’s kind of going on in the action figure industry, the consumer, what we’re all thinking, or at least what I’m seeing online about what people are thinking. My thoughts, all that good stuff from time to time, fire off a little bit of news. Tomorrow, for instance, there’s a GI Joe panel going on and I’m pretty excited about that.

First Things First, Where Have I Been?
Why have I not been recording, or on the website? Well, I’ll tell you.
Here’s the deal: for months. I was really low on energy and I’m not really that guy. I like to exercise. I like to sprint, lift weights. That kind of stuff.
I’m an energetic dude. I like to be out and about doing things and having fun. And I realized, “Wow, my energy’s really getting low,” and I couldn’t come up with any reason for why that was happening. So I started going to the doctor to try and figure out what’s going on. And after months, these poor people, they did a whole lot of investigating after months. They figured out what was going on and gave me an antibiotic. And within a few days I was good to go. So I’ve been able to kind of catch back up, and get my exercise in.
If you’ll notice, if you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, that is, you’ll notice that the pictures are getting a little more detailed. I’m putting a little more stuff out there. There’s less pictures that have just a black background because frankly, I didn’t have the energy to set up anything better.
So that’s, what’s up. That’s where I was. I was trying to figure out that. Like I said, I still posted all the pictures, but man, video recording, having all this energy, even all the ones I’ve recorded around December, January, and all that, I didn’t have near the energy I have now.
So there you go. That’s it. Now on to the figures. Cause that’s the fun part, right? Right.
NECA Mirage Studios TMNT Fugitoid

S H Figuarts The Mandalorian Boba Fett

I’m gonna be honest: I love this figure.
This is the Boba Fett from The Mandalorian, from S H Figuarts. And I think he is possibly in top 10 contention. I don’t know yet. It’s gonna be a while. I need to see what else I’m gonna get this year. I’ve got plenty on pre-orders that are probably gonna fight for top 10. So it’s gonna be a stiff competition.
But what I dig about this guy is the cloth, even though it’s inaccurate. I would prefe if it were the sash, but I think this is still a really great representation of the guy. I do have to say one thing that I didn’t enjoy was getting the head sculpt that has the cross-eyed deal. Fortunately, when you’re displaying Boba Fett, at least for me, you display him with a helmet on. But I was still disappointed because one of the reasons I was really a big fan of this figure is because I thought this Temuera Morrison head sculpt was going to easily be the best one out there.
So, there’s a little disappointment there, slight disappointment with the sash. But he comes with a ton of hand options, some blast effects that you can attach on his rocket pack, and a couple rockets.
I’m not gonna talke about him too much. I’m not gonna get too in detail about him, in depth as it were, because this isn’t really a review site. Let’s face it. I’m a photography guy. And this dude under the lights just looks good in pictures.
Related: S H Figuarts Boba Fett (Return of the Jedi) on Amazon
S H Figuarts Mandalorian (Din Djarin)

Now we have arguably the two most popular Star Wars characters since Disney took over the license: The Mandalorian and Grogu. These are also S H Figuarts figures.
I, uh, I don’t think Grogu needs a whole lot of work done to him, and don’t think you’re ever gonna get a Grogu that’s super highly articulated. But I think this is just enough articulation for the little guy. And hey, he’s just adorable. You gotta love the Grogu.
Then, of course, you’ve got Mando. Now the S F Figuarts Mandalorian has been met with disappointment by many. What I dig about him is how articulated he is and how shiny he is. Now there are things I’ve had to do to him to make him a figure that I really enjoy. I mean, I really enjoy this figure, but there are concessions I’ve had to make.
I have never attached his rifle to his back, for instance, because in every review I’ve seen that just looks like way too much of a pain. I barely use the spear. I have attached it to the belt, but it’s kind of hard to make work. It’s sort of a hard plastic and the piece that attaches it is also a hard plastic. So you gotta hit them both with a little bit of heat to try and make ’em work. But then, when I do that, the spear just slides all over the place. It’s not like it really stays put, so that’s a pain. The blue knee pad falls off. I’ve had a piece on his right forearm just fall off. I’ve had the pauldron on his right shoulder fall off. So yeah, he’s a pain.
I also got a John Walker Customs neck peg so his head can sit a little higher.
But I think he looks incredible. I think to get him there, he’s a pain to work with and you have to allow yourself the fact that, going forward, he doesn’t have the spear or the rifle on the show; the spear was melted into chain mail for Grogu, and the rifle was blown up with the Razor Crest; so we don’t have to use those. And that makes the accessories not really matter. Right? So there are concessions I’ve had to make for Mando.
That said, this is a beautiful figure. I love photographing this guy. And as much as I dig Boba, I actually like Din Djarin quite a bit more. So your mileage may vary on this one. This one’s kind of divisive, but at least for me, he leans definitely in the positive. Not a top 10 because all the concessions I have to make, not a contender, but he is really one of my favorite figures right now.
Which is just messed up.

Threezero MDLX Bumblebee

And now the final figure that I’ve gotten in the time been away is the Threezero Transformers MDLX (because who doesn’t like a lot of letters) Bumblebee!
Now this figure, right now, is in contention to be my figure of the year. Yep. Definitely. Definitely in contention. Now, if you’ve been paying attention to my stuff for a long time, you know I dig MAFEX figures. And those things, even when you shop for them overseas (you get them a little cheaper there), are $80 – $100. This Bumblebee was $60 flat (plus shipping obviously), but $60 for this thing compared to a MAFEX is nuts! Now the MAFEX usually comes with more stuff. This bumblebee came with another head, three pairs of hands, and his gun. Pretty good stuff. Pretty good deal I’d say for $60. And forget that he is so well articulated. It’s insane. The articulation’s tight, but not restrictive.
Bumblebee’s the first ThreeZero figure I’ve ever gotten, and it is just phenomenal. I’ve never handled a figure like this. It’s just really cool. And it’s an action figure I think you owe it to yourself to check out. Yeah, you owe it to yourself to check out the Transformers MDL X line. So far, they’ve only released bumblebee, but Prime is available for pre-order all over the place. I’ve got him on pre-order because you can’t have Transformers without Optimus Prime.
Bumblebee is just awesome, and right now, of the four figures I’ve gotten in 2022, Bumblebee is my figure of the year! Yeah, good times. But anywho, get Bumblebee! Trust me. This thing is ridiculous. Of course, if you’re not a Transformers, nerd, maybe don’t get him. But if you’re not a Transformers nerd, let’s face it. You’re doing something wrong with your life.
Finally! The End
That’s all I’ve got for this one, gang. So, as usual: have fun, and happy snapping!

5 Reasons it was Time for a Marvel Legends Purge
It’s Marvel Legends Purge time. Now, let’s not get off on the wrong foot. I love Marvel Legends. Since I started seriously shooting pics of my toy collection in 2018, the Legends have definitely been the featured line. And I’m not getting rid of them all, because I’d have almost nothing to shoot!
And because many of them are great figures.
But I ran into a problem: the shots were getting harder and harder to get excited about. And I think I know why.
Here are the reasons, in list form, because SEO.

1. My Own Collecting Rules

I only collect 616 Legends figures, which (for the uninitiated) means I only get comic figures from the main Marvel comic book timeline. Yes, it’s highly nerdy, and possibly unnecessary, but it’s how I roll. Also, it helps keep spending in check.
After all, a million Wolverines aren’t cheap.
Related: Toy Collecting: What Are Your Rules?
2. Repaints Galore
When it comes to unique molds, the movie figures get most of the love. That means quite a few of the ones available to me, via my highly nerdy and possibly unnecessary rules, are fairly straightforward repaints. You realize you’re buying the same figure, several times over, with different colors and a new head to try to sweeten the deal. After a while, that kinda loses its appeal.
Unless we’re talking about Wolvie, of course.
I understand Hasbro needs to do this for cost / business reasons, but that doesn’t make the repainted figures any less boring.
3. Outdated Articulation

Before I even get started, the team at Marvel Legends – who are the most honest and transparent group I’ve seen from any toy company – are making leaps and bounds in this area. But like my multi-million dollar man cave with perfect action figure displays, Sasquatch butler, and ribeye vending machine, they’re not there yet.
Ball hinges at the waist aren’t standard. Neither is the ability to twist at the chest. And while the joints at some of the female figures’ elbows are getting longer, allowing a deeper bend at the arm, they still don’t have bicep swivels or double elbows. Which I was all about giving the Legends team a pass on, until I saw Lady Jaye from the GI Joe: Classified line. And that transitions me beautifully into the next point.
Related: GI Joe: Classified Photo Gallery
4. Marvel Legends’ Own Worst Enemy: Hasbro

Two other lines I collect: GI Joe: Classified and Star Wars: The Black Series, are both from Hasbro. And those lines are also contributing to my Marvel Legends purge.
GI Joe: Classified

Let’s start with GI Joe: Classified, and forget about the current problems that line has because I’m sure *gulp* they’ll be corrected.
We’ve already seen a ton of repaints with Classified. Straight-up repaints, even (I’m looking at you, Cobra Commander.) The thing is, unless it’s the same character recolored, it’s not nearly as in-your-face as Marvel Legends.
Instead of Firefly being just a repainted Beach Head with a new *ahem* head, he’s a mash-up of three different figure molds that inexplicably fit together. And he has a brand new overlay. Those overlays go a long way to ensure that every character is easily distinguishable from the next one.
But the real treat, for me, is how great the standard articulation is. Snake Eyes actually moves like he can do ninja things! And, weirdly enough, so does Duke. And Scarlett. And Destro. Though oddly enough, Storm Shadow (a ninja) got short changed. Weird.
As a line, the action figures in Classified are simply fun to move around.
Star Wars: The Black Series

Star Wars was my first nerd love. But to me, the Black Series didn’t seem worth the money. Then photo real (which prints actor likenesses on head sculpts) came along. And I was that six-year-old kid again. With photo real, the likenesses are great and the rest of the molds are nearly perfect. With greater frequency, these figures look exactly like they did on the silver screen.
Just like Classified, with few exceptions, the repaints tend to be obvious repaints. An Obi-Wan painted one way tends to get repainted as another Obi-Wan. And Stormtroopers get repainted into, well, other Stormtroopers. With different colors. Because repaints.
When it comes to articulation, they don’t have the range of motion you’ll find with Legends or Classified, but for the most part, they move like people. And if you’ve seen the movies, you’ll notice most of the actors are, indeed, people.
Side note: It always cracks me up when a reviewer’s disappointed because a figure’s legs won’t move very far back at the hip, because they almost all have greater range of motion there than I do. Seriously, try it. But don’t get caught. You only make that mistake once.
Transformers

Okay, I don’t collect those. But like that one dude you work with who always “forgets” his wallet, those recent releases are really begging for my lunch money.
In short: all of Hasbro’s lines want all my money. And none of them can have it all, so each figure has to earn it. Right now, more Black Series and Classified figures are earning it.
5. Toy Photography
I’ll admit it: I really enjoy my toy collection. It gives me a chance to unwind and get creative. But if I didn’t have fun taking pics of them, I wouldn’t have nearly as many as I do.
And what makes for a fun photo for yours truly? Dios? Fog effects? Lights? Well yeah, duh! But mostly, it’s figures that look like they’re supposed to look, and move like they’re supposed to move – bonus points if I’m not bored with the figure because I’ve seen the mold so many times.
And while there are an increasing number of Marvel Legends that meet those criteria, there’s currently a higher percentage of Black Series and Classified figures that pull it off.
Finally! The End
So yeah, I’m selling some Legends off. But only the ones I really don’t dig / feel like taking pics of. That way, I can keep a more quality-over-quantity toy collection, and it’ll help me add more quality figures to said collection. Plus, I’m keeping a lot more than I’m selling.
Besides, who’d ever want to get rid of a million Wolverines?
Have fun, and happy snapping!

Action Figure Photography: Nov 15 – Nov 21, 2020
The Toypixx Action Figure photography from the past week are up!
This time, I tried adding a little more action and color to the shots. I even included the old Marvel Legends Retro Spidey in a couple. Of course, that’s because I’m still waiting for the new one to show up.
This week, I was happy with the composition, action, and effects. Unfortunately, one thing they lacked was enough color to really stand out. I’d say “pop,” but that term drives me, and every other graphic designer, nuts because it’s so vague. Unless we’re talking about Coke.
As always, I’ll leave links below the pics so you know what figures and accessories were used in each shot. And because of that, here’s everyone’s favorite disclaimer: Toypixx is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to amazon.com.

Action Figure Photography: Nov 8 – Nov 14, 2020
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been a product photographer and a graphic designer for quite a while. That, combined with an interest in mythology and a love of the characters featured in our favorite funny books, makes action figure photography the perfect hobby for me. I try to put drama into the shots through lighting and poses that make them look like they’re in action, or at least prepping for it. Sometimes, I’m more successful than other times.
If I’m being honest, I felt good about this week’s shots compositionally, but they were overall a little dull, color-wise. I was happy with the posing, though, so that’s a bonus.
As always, I’ll leave links below the pics so you know what figures and accessories were used in each shot. Action Figure Photography: Nov 1, 2020 – Nov 7, 2020
I love shooting action figures. Action figure photography is just a blast. It lets my inner kid run crazy, which is something I dig in a huge way!
This week, I took pics of some of my favorite characters, including some of my very favorite figures. I used a Black Widow cobbled together from a few different ones. The 80th Anniversary Captain America, which is my favorite version And the Vintage brown suit Wolverine with some claws from Can of Beams!
I’ll post the photos below (along with links to get the stuff used in the photos). All you have to do is look at the pics.
So here we go!
